Different types of range finders on WBKs:

  1. Stadiametric Rangefinders - These are makeshift digital rangefinders that use digital readouts to triangulate the distance - Many devices have this type of rangefinder
  2. Laser range finders: These are the "real" range finders with precise distance determination at the push of a button.

Information about range finders on thermal imagers

In recent months, other devices with laser rangefinders have come onto the market. The advantage of these devices is the precise determination of the distance to the Wild, which prevents missed shots when applying. The laser rangefinders from different manufacturers offer different operating modes. What they all have in common is the use of infrared technology, which is not visible to the human/animal eye.

Operating modes in laser rangefinders

Single measurement – the distance is determined when the corresponding button is pressed. Often, the button must be pressed once to activate the laser and a second time to perform the measurement. This type of measurement is found in Xeye and Gun-Tec devices.

Permanent measurement - In this mode, the laser can be set so that it permanently determines distances based on a point in the center of the field of view. This procedure is currently only used at Pulsar-devices offered, whereby Pulsar-Devices also enable individual measurements.

Stadiametric range finders vs. laser range finders

Stadiametric rangefinders can be found in the menu settings of many models. This is one Makeshift Rangefinder, in which digital horizontal guides are drawn on the display. The hunter can now bring these together or move them further apart. By specifying the Wildis (Wildpig, redwild..) and adapting the lines to that Wild An approximate distance can now be concluded. In practice, this function cannot always be used effectively. For a better understanding, please watch the following video, which demonstrates the stadiametric rangefinder.

More information

Current thermal imaging cameras with rangefinders (LRF module)

Thermal imaging cameras with laser rangefinders include thermal imaging observation devices (thermal imaging cameras) as well as thermal imaging attachments for the target optics :

Thermal imaging observation devices with range finders

Pulsar Axion XQ38 LRF – Mid-range thermal imaging spotter with laser range finder. Advantage: Very compact and light as well as a very good laser range finder with continuous measuring function.

InfiRay Outdoor Finder II FH35R  – The current (11/23) top model InfiRay Finder device series, which has a high-resolution and modern (<25mK NETD sensitivity!) Sensor combined with a 35mm lens and a very powerful LRF module. As is typical of “Finder”, the model has a replaceable battery. All in all that perfect universal thermal imaging device for hunters.

InfiRay Outdoor Finder II FL35R – It is not yet clear whether the FL35R V2 will actually come onto the market (11/23). It would be the analog model to the Finder I FL35R, so it would correspond to the FH35R V2, but with the mid-range sensor.

InfiRay Outdoor FH35R (2022) – Top model of the first Finder series. The FH35R is an extremely popular device among hunters, compact, very powerful and sufficient for most hunting situations. Paired with the LRF module and removable battery, the hunter gets one of the best devices on the market.

InfiRay Outdoor FL35R (2022) – The FL35R corresponds to the FH35R, but is equipped with the mid-range sensor. The system performance is therefore slightly below that of the sister model. However, due to the good overall performance with LRF and removable battery, the FL35R is extremely popular and one of the most successful price-performance models in recent months.

Binoculars (you look with two eyes):

Pulsar Merger XP50 LRF – The merger of Pulsar replaces the Accolade as binocular thermal imaging device from Pulsar. Accordingly, “the best of the best” was installed. The hunter gets a high-resolution sensor, 50mm lens, replaceable battery and the highest quality workmanship for his money.

Infiray Outdoor GEH50R – Newly launched on the market in autumn 2023, the GEH50R is an attractive binocular for the highest demands. The device has both a thermal image and a night vision channel and can also combine these two (fusion technology) to optimally use the advantages of both technologies.

Thermal imaging attachments with range finders

Thermal imaging attachments with an integrated LRF module were quite rare for a few years. After the first devices, such as the Dedal Quest LRF, there were practically no devices with LRF for years. This changed in 2023. InfiRay Outdoor has Mate-Series presented, whose devices are replaced by a separate one LRF module from InfiRay can be equipped with a laser rangefinder. In the second half of 2023, the Chinese manufacturer PARD then presented its first thermal imaging attachment for the European market. What is pleasing is that it is PARD FT32 both with and without an integrated LRF module.

PARD FT32 LRF – Presented in 10/23, the FT32 LRF immediately impressed us. What is striking about the device is the compactness and maneuverability of the attachment without having to make any restrictions in terms of performance and features: interchangeable battery system, well thought-out operation, interchangeable battery system and, in the LRF version, the distance measurer PARD FT32 LRF is one of the most interesting devices currently on the market.

InfiRay Mate MAL25 / MAL38 / MAH50 InfiRays Current thermal imaging attachments can be supplemented with a laser rangefinder using a removable LRF module. The device series MATE covers both the entry-level, middle class and upper class range for demanding hunters.

Discontinued device series

Xeye Iray FH25R “Finder” – Compact & lightweight high-end thermal imaging device with laser rangefinder. Advantage: Compact dimensions, yet a very high-resolution detector (640 x 512px) combined with a reliable laser rangefinder.

Pulsar Accolade 2 XP50 Pro - Top class thermal imaging binoculars (with both eyes) and integrated laser range finder. Advantage: very pleasant long-term use (because you look with both eyes, thus relieving your eyes) as well as a very good range finder!

Gun-Tec GT-Oberon LRF – novelty in 2021 from Gun-Tec; Thermal imaging attachment optionally with integrated laser rangefinder. Advantage: Distance can be determined and checked directly before applying!

Dedal 380 T2 Quest LRF - Good, but already somewhat older thermal imaging attachment with adapted laser range finder.
