Guide TB650S review: Compact attachment from the new ApexVision generation

The Guide TB650S is a high-end front attachment from Guide's TB 2.0 series. OutdoorIt's a thermal imaging device that you simply attach to your existing daytime optics – without needing to re-zero once it's correctly mounted. At its core is the new ApexVision system: The ApexCore S1 sensorThe Nexus 1.0 platform and the Hyper-Light 2.0 image algorithm work together to elevate the sensor's image sharpness far beyond what one would expect from a 640 sensor. With only 490 grams The TB650S is one of the lighter attachments in its class – a touch heavier than a large flashlight, but light enough to leave permanently attached to the barrel. It's operated via classic side buttons and powered by a single 18650 battery. The TB650S doesn't have a built-in laser rangefinder – but you can get the more precise one. 15 mK sensor of the series. This test classifies the device based on the manufacturer's specifications and publicly available practical insights, and shows for which hunting area the TB650S is suitable.

Who is the Guide TB650S suitable for?

mixed area
The combination of solid detection range and compact form factor makes the TB650S an uncomplicated all-rounder for switching between forest and field edges.
Very suitable
field station
The narrow field of vision is a real strength in open areas: Wild It can be clearly seen from a greater distance; the detection range of up to 2600 meters is easily sufficient for most field areas.
Strong advantage
forest district
With a field of view of approximately 15 meters at 100 meters, the field of view is rather narrow for dense forest. Moving Wild Things at the edge of the image are more easily lost from view; a deliberately slower panning motion compensates for this.
Conditionally suitable
WildAnimal monitoring
The internal photo and video recording with 64 GB of storage and WLAN connectivity also makes the TB650S suitable for documented use. WildPractical observation, including audio recording.

New: The ApexVision system

NEW: ApexVision system

The ApexVision system is the key innovation of the TB-2.0 series. The ApexCore S1 sensor delivers the raw data, the Nexus 1.0 platform processes it, and the Hyper-Light 2.0 algorithm generates the visible image. In practice, this means more contrast and detail from a 640 sensor, especially in challenging conditions like rain or high humidity.

Sensor & Image Quality: 640×512 pixels with 15 mK NETD

At the heart of the TB650S is an uncooled VOx sensor with a resolution of 640×512 pixels and a pixel pitch of 12 micrometers. Crucial to image quality is the NETD value of 15 mK – a top-tier value that describes how finely the device resolves even the smallest temperature differences, making the TB650S one of the most thermally sensitive devices in its sensor class. With a 50 Hz refresh rate, the image remains smooth even during fast movements, without judder or ghosting. The TB650S displays the image sharply and with high contrast on its 0,39-inch AMOLED display with 1920×1080 pixels. Seven color palettes – from White Hot to Red Hot to Sepia – are available, depending on which mode provides the best contrast.

Optics & Range: 50mm lens without rangefinder

The TB650S uses a high-luminosity lens. 50mm lens at aperture F0.9 and manual focus. With a basic magnification of 1x and a viewing angle of 8,8° by 6,6°, the field of view at a distance of 100 meters is approximately... 15 by 11 metersThis is rather narrowly tailored – an advantage in open fields, because you Wild It brings objects closer at a distance, but in dense forests it's a limitation because the overall field of view is smaller. Guide specifies a detection range of up to... 2600 meters The device offers a click resolution of 1,22 centimeters at 100 meters for fine adjustment of the reticle and can be combined with daytime optics up to 15x magnification.

Attention

The TB650S does not have an integrated laser rangefinder. Those who want to read the distance to the target directly in the image will need an external solution or a sister model with LRF (laser rangefinder).

Recording & Features: Wi-Fi, 64 GB storage and shutterless design

The TB650S connects to the app via Wi-Fi on the 2,4 and 5 GHz bands and transfers images and videos to a smartphone. Internally, it offers 64 GB of storage for photos and videos, including audio, and an integrated microphone records ambient sounds. Guide advertises the device with a third-generation shutterless design, which is intended to ensure a continuous image without calibration breaks. However, according to the manufacturer, a shutter module engages during startup and in the event of significant temperature fluctuations to maintain image quality – a soft clicking sound during this process is normal. Operation is via a few side buttons, supplemented by an optional Bluetooth remote control module that allows the device to be attached to a shooting pole.

Important notes

A brief clicking sound when switching on or during strong temperature changes comes from the internal shutter module. It serves as a calibration process and is not a defect.

Battery & Robustness: 490 grams, IP68, one 18650 battery

Weighing in at 490 grams, the TB650S is among the lighter clip-on devices – only slightly heavier than a standard flashlight. It's powered by a single, replaceable 18650 battery, which, according to the specifications, provides approximately five hours of runtime . However, carrying a second battery in your backpack is advisable for longer sessions, as the runtime can vary depending on screen brightness and whether the sleep mode is used. The housing is IP68- rated for dust and water resistance and, according to the manufacturer, can withstand a shock of 6000 joules. The device is also designed to operate reliably in temperatures as low as -20°C and as high as 50°C.

Conclusion

On paper, the Guide TB650S is a top-of-the-line device from the new ApexVision generation. Its exceptionally fine 15 mK sensor and Hyper-Light 2.0 image processing extract a level of sharpness and detail from its 640×512 pixels that is hardly expected in this sensor class. Thanks to its compact design and strong detection range, the TB650S is ideally suited for mixed terrain and open fields. In dense forests, the rather narrow field of view becomes noticeable, where a deliberately slower scanning speed is beneficial. Those who value an integrated laser rangefinder will find it in its sister model, the Guide TB650LS – the TB650S, however, scores points with its finer sensor and lighter weight. For those seeking even more performance, the Guide TB1260LS , the high-performance sibling with a 1280 sensor and a wider field of view, is the answer. Those seeking a compact, minimalist entry-level device without multimedia features will likely find what they're looking for in the Guide Orion C-series . We recommend the TB650S to anyone seeking a lightweight, high-end clip-on device for field and mixed hunting areas, and who can do without on-screen distance measurement.
