Two legal levels – weapons law and hunting law

This is the crucial point that many hunters underestimate: firearms law and hunting law are two separate sets of regulations , and a permit on one level does not override a prohibition on the other. Therefore, anyone who is legally permitted to possess firearms must still check whether the hunting laws in their state comply.

gun law
Regulated nationwide. Since February 2020, holders of a valid hunting license have been permitted to use night vision scopes and attachments for hunting purposes (§ 40 para. 3 sentence 4 WaffG).
Uniform nationwide
hunting rights
Generally prohibited by Section 19 Paragraph 1 of the Federal Hunting Act. However, the federal states are allowed to deviate from this – and almost all of them have now done so for hunting in black groves.wild done.
State matter
Important: Infrared illuminators

The exemption under weapons law does not apply to artificial light sources – and this includes the infrared illuminators built into many night vision devices . A device with an integrated IR illuminator may therefore not be used as a weapon, even if the illuminator is switched off . The illuminator must be permanently deactivated in such a way that it cannot be easily reactivated – simply switching it off is not sufficient.

Overview: Thermal imaging attachments on weapons – what applies where?

In 2020/2021, the federal legislature planned nationwide standardization – including the legalization of infrared illuminators on firearms. However, this reform has not yet been passed and is therefore off the table for the time being. The regulation thus remains a matter for the individual states. Currently (as of February 2025), there are exceptions under state law for the use of night vision technology in black areas.wild in 14 out of 16 federal states. Only Bremen and Hamburg have not yet made a corresponding arrangement.

State Intentional use of a weapon Artificial light sources / IR Silencer Features
Baden-Württemberg PERMITTED FORBIDDEN ALLOWED (firearms license entry) Night hunting ban for hooveswild (except black)wild) remains
Bayern PERMITTED PERMITTED LIMITED (application required) Intentional intent applies to blackwild, robberywild and nutria; not for species listed in Annex IV of the Habitats Directive. Silencers: formally prohibited under the State Hunting Act, however, authorities approve applications across the board on the instructions of the Ministry of the Interior.
Berlin PERMITTED PROHIBITED (under weapons law) ALLOWED (firearms license entry) The general order applies to all hunting districts.
Brandenburg PERMITTED PROHIBITED (under weapons law) ALLOWED (firearms license entry) Also for raccoons and raccoon dogs
Bremen FORBIDDEN FORBIDDEN ALLOWED (firearms license entry) Night vision technology: no exceptions permitted under state law. Silencers: allowed.
Hamburg INDIVIDUAL CASE APPROVAL FORBIDDEN RESTRICTED (General Decree) Night vision technology: no general exemption. Silencers: the State Hunting Law generally prohibits them; however, a general order issued by the city overrides the ban on long guns using centerfire ammunition.
Hessen PERMITTED PROHIBITED (under weapons law) ALLOWED (firearms license entry) Only to the extent permitted under Section 40 Paragraph 3 Sentence 4 of the Weapons Act
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern PERMITTED Just not weapon-related ALLOWED (firearms license entry) Also for robberywild and nutria; attachments and add-on devices explicitly permitted
Lower Saxony PERMITTED Just not weapon-related ALLOWED (firearms license entry) Also raccoon, raccoon dog, mink, nutria; FFH species only with individual approval. The ban on silencers in the State Hunting Act was already repealed in 2018.
North Rhine-Westphalia DUAL-USE / NIGHT VISION ONLY Just not weapon-related ALLOWED (firearms license entry) Thermal imaging devices prohibited! Shooting only from an elevated hunting stand, max. 100 m; ASF areas: extended regulations with official authorization
Rheinland-Pfalz PERMITTED PROHIBITED (under weapons law) ALLOWED (firearms license entry) Applies to all hunting districts; amendment to the law planned.
Saarland PERMITTED Just not weapon-related ALLOWED (firearms license entry) Expansion to include robberywild and neozoa planned, not yet in force
Saxony PERMITTED Just not weapon-related ALLOWED (firearms license entry) Specifically for long guns; special regulations apply in ASF restricted areas.
Saxony-Anhalt PERMITTED PROHIBITED (under weapons law) ALLOWED (firearms license entry) Target shooting only with long gun on blackwildSilencers: only for centerfire ignition; rimfire only with special permit.
Schleswig-Holstein PERMITTED Just not weapon-related ALLOWED (firearms license entry) Intentional hunting is only permitted for adults with at least one year of annual hunting license; this also includes hair theft.wild and nutria
Thuringia PERMITTED ALLOWED (including IR illuminators) LIMITED (caliber dependent) Intentional measures also apply to invasive species. Silencers: permitted only for long guns with centerfire ignition and E₁₀₀ > 1000 J; prohibited for smaller calibers and rimfire ammunition.

Thermal imaging attachment vs. night vision attachment: What are the respective advantages?

One point that repeatedly causes confusion in practice is that thermal imaging and night vision devices are not necessarily treated the same under the law . In North Rhine-Westphalia, for example, thermal imaging devices are generally prohibited on firearms, while dual-use night vision devices are permitted under certain conditions. In most other German states, the exceptions generally apply to "night vision devices with image intensifiers or electronic amplification"—which covers both.

Thermal imaging attachment
No integrated IR illuminator – technically not a problem under weapons law. Permitted in most German states with authorization. Exception: North Rhine-Westphalia explicitly prohibits thermal imaging devices.
Allowed in 13 out of 14 countries
Night vision attachment
Often with an integrated IR illuminator – this must be permanently deactivated. Dual-use devices (only on the scope, not directly on the weapon) have broader approval.
Pay attention to IR illuminators!

Silencers in hunting – federal law and state regulations

In Germany, silencers generally require a permit under weapons law and must be entered in the weapons possession card (WBK).

Under federal law, the use of silencers for hunting is generally permitted . In most German states, state legislatures have explicitly authorized their use for hunters – usually after registration on a firearms license. Restrictions exist only in Bavaria (formal prohibition in the State Hunting Act, but authorities approve applications across the board upon ministerial instruction), Hamburg (formal prohibition, but suspended for centerfire rifles by general decree), and Thuringia (only for centerfire rifles with a muzzle energy > 1.000 joules; prohibited for smaller calibers and rimfire ammunition). In all other German states, silencers are permitted for hunters with a firearms license without further restrictions.

Practical tip: Silencer

A silencer not only protects your hearing – it also reduces muzzle blast and recoil perception, which is especially important with the SchwarzwildHunting from a stand allows for a calmer shot. Those who frequently hunt for wild boar at night or at dusk.wild It sits, combines a thermal imaging attachment and a silencer into an effective, non-disturbing system. Important: Always check the firearms license entry before use and observe the current regulations of your own federal state.

Titanium silencers: lightweight, robust, low-maintenance

They have proven particularly useful for hunting. Titanium silencer: The MateTitanium is corrosion-resistant, significantly lighter than aluminum, and exceptionally robust. Unlike aluminum, titanium does not suffer from oxidation caused by gunpowder residue and moisture – which reduces maintenance to a minimum. Anyone who occasionally drops their suppressor or exposes it to harsh hunting conditions will quickly appreciate its mechanical durability.

Important before buying

To ensure you can immediately screw your silencer onto your firearm upon receipt, the barrel thread must be prepared. If your barrel doesn't yet have a thread, we'll cut the threads for you in our master workshop in Rastede – quickly, precisely, and professionally.

Special case: ASF areas

In areas affected by or at risk from African swine fever (ASF) , veterinary authorities may issue further special regulations. These take precedence over the general hunting regulations (§§ 24 and 44a of the Federal Hunting Act). If officially ordered, hunters in these zones are also permitted to use items that would otherwise be prohibited under weapons law – such as integrated night vision devices. Anyone hunting in an ASF-affected area should be familiar with the current general decrees issued by the responsible authority.

Practical tip for ASF hunting

In North Rhine-Westphalia, the extended use of night vision technology is permitted in ASF core areas and buffer zones – but only after written authorization from the lower hunting authority . Obtain this authorization before hunting. It will protect you in any discussions with the authorities.

Key facts at a glance

What is allowed?
  • Purchase and possession of thermal imaging attachments and night vision attachments
  • Use as a handheld device (monocular) for hunting
  • Thermal imaging attachment on the riflescope: permitted in 13 of 14 German states with an exception clause.
  • Night vision attachment without IR illuminator on blackwild: in almost all countries with approval
  • Silencers with firearms license entry: permitted in all German states (Bavaria, Hamburg, Thuringia with restrictions)
What remains prohibited
  • Attachment devices with activatable IR illuminator, weapon-specific (nationwide)
  • Any night vision technology on the weapon is prohibited in Bremen (no state law applies).
  • Thermal imaging attachments on firearms are explicitly prohibited under hunting law in North Rhine-Westphalia.
  • Silencers without firearms license entry and for smaller calibers/rimfire rifles in Thuringia
  • Attachment technology for other Wild as Blackwild/robberywild without country exception
Common mistake in practice

Many hunters assume that a switched-off IR illuminator poses no problem. This is legally incorrect : Even carrying a night vision device with an activatable IR illuminator on a firearm is illegal – regardless of whether the illuminator is currently switched on or not. If in doubt, we recommend using thermal imaging clip-on devices , which by design do not have an IR illuminator.
